Resolution supporting a peaceful resolution of the Indo-Naga issue adopted
Dimapur, Aug. 5 (EMN): The NSCN (IM) participated in the XV General Assembly of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation (UNPO) which was held in Washington DC (USA) via virtual conferencing from July 31 to August 2. A resolution was adopted supporting a peaceful resolution of the Indo-Naga issue at the event.
The ministry of Information and Publicity, NSCN/GPRN, informed this through an update on Wednesday.
Describing the participation as a “matter of pride for Nagalim”, the update informed that the Naga delegates led by Lt. Gen. (Retd.) VS Atem, VC (member of Collective Leadership, NSCN) moved the proposal that Indo-Naga political issue be adopted and spoke on three different sessions.
It said the event culminated with the adoption of the resolution after passing of votes in the plenary session on the last day.
The resolution read: “Support a peaceful resolution of the Indo-Naga issue which is just, long lasting, honourable and acceptable to both the sides, calls upon the international community to appeal to India to fulfill its commitments in the Framework Agreement on the Indo-Naga issue, and urges India to repeal acts such as the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act and the Disturbed Area Act which overly militarise the situation facing the Naga people.”
“No less important for Nagalim is the adoption of resolution on the implementation of UN Sustainable Development Goal 16. The resolution highlights positive instances within the past six years where self-determination issues have been freely put to vote,” read the statement issued by the MIP.
The NSCN has been persistently involved in UNPO activities ever since Nagalim represented by the group was admitted into UNPO on January 23, 1993, it stated.
While appreciating the UNPO for extending consistent support to the Naga people as testified by adopting a resolution at its XV General Assembly, the NSCN assured its unflinching support to the leadership of UNPO. “The Naga people shall strive to adhere to the principle of UNPO to resolve its political issues through peaceful and nonviolent means,” it said.
The NSCN also congratulate five new members – Catalonia, Guam, Yoruba, The Movement for the river races of Zambesia, and Biafra – that were inducted into the UNPO fold.
