Police authorities of Kohima have arrested a cadre of the underground group NSCN (IM) on charges of extortion from Manipur-bound trucks in Kohima. The Kohima police issued a press release on Tuesday, November 25, stating that the underground activist, identified as one Indrason from Manipur, had been arrested on November 24.
On November 24, the police stated, complaints were received that ‘some unknown miscreants’ were extorting money from Manipur-bound trucks along the old bye-pass check gate in Kohima.
“On receipt of the information, the Mobile Unit of DEF Kohima was pressed into action and accordingly one Indrason (32 yrs) S/o – Ngamhlung, Village – Ngamkhu, Dist – Chandel, State – Manipur, P/Add – Lower AG colony, Kohima belonging to NSCN (IM) rank – Office Asst. was apprehended from the spot while one of his accomplice managed to escape under the cover of darkness,” the press release stated.
“On physical search being made upon the arrested person, cash amounting to Rs. 12,900 which was collected from Manipur bound trucks was recovered from his possession. As per his initial statement, they were collecting Rs. 200 to 300 from each Manipur bound trucks in the name of NSCN (IM) set-up,” the authorities stated.
“In this connection a regular case vide Kohima South P.S case No. 0122/15 U/S 384 IPC r/w 7 NSR’ 62 is registered against him for extorting money from Manipur trucks and for committing highway robbery at NH-29.”
