DIMAPUR — The National People’s Party (NPP) Nagaland state unit has lauded the ongoing demolition and clearance drive initiated by the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) to remove illegal and unauthorised temporary structures across congested areas of Dimapur city.

In a press release, the NPP Nagaland stated that this action, particularly in zones such as New Market, Bata Charali, and beneath the new flyover, is a timely step toward easing traffic congestion, improving pedestrian movement, and restoring civic order.

The party acknowledged the coordinated effort of DMC officials, the Traffic Police division, and ward councillors in implementing the drive systematically, ward by ward.

The party also appreciates that the focus is strictly on illegal temporary structures and not on permanent buildings, ensuring fairness and sensitivity.

The party also raised some concerns and suggestions on garbage management, dust pollution from unpaved roadside edges, need for modern sweeping technology, Dimapur’s drainage infrastructure, and lack of scientific town planning.

“Proper garbage management remains one of Dimapur’s biggest challenges. NPP emphasises that only a modern, scientific approach — including segregation, processing, and upgraded collection systems — can provide a sustainable solution,” it stated.

The NPP pointed out that many roadside edges across the city remain unpaved, generating significant dust pollution and giving Dimapur an untidy appearance. It added that during the rainy season, these edges trap water, worsen congestion, and inconvenience pedestrians, and suggested that paving and strengthening roadside edges should be a priority measure.

On the need for modern sweeping technology, it stated that manual sweeping methods are insufficient for a rapidly growing commercial centre like Dimapur. The party recommended the introduction of modern sweeping machines to ensure efficient, hygienic, and time-saving cleanliness operations.

Furthermore, it stated that Dimapur's drainage infrastructure is in critical condition, with drains frequently choked and overflowing, leading to water logging during rains, and uneven pavements and open drains posing safety hazards, causing injuries.

The party called for a comprehensive drainage overhaul, including desilting, widening, and redesigning the network.

On lack of scientific town planning, it stated that the absence of structured town planning and poor utilisation of DMC assets continue to affect the city’s growth. The party stressed the need for a modern master plan, supported by professional urban planners and efficient asset management.

“NPP Nagaland appreciates the initiative to clear illegal structures and encourages DMC to continue such measures. Long-term improvement will require modern waste management, upgraded drainage, improved roadside infrastructure, and scientific town planning,” the release stated.

NPYF calls for price check during Christmas season

The National People’s Youth Front (NPYF) has appealed to the Dimapur district administration to monitor price inflation during the Christmas season. In a statement on Thursday, the youth front stated that as the festive Christmas season approaches, concerns have been raised regarding the steep rise in prices of essential commodities and consumer goods across various markets.

The NPYF expressed concern that several traders and business establishments are charging excessively high rates, particularly targeting customers travelling from far-flung and rural areas who depend on urban markets for their seasonal purchases.

It expressed serious concern over such exploitative practices that burden the public, especially economically weaker households, and noted that the festive season should be a time of joy, not a period where citizens are subjected to unfair pricing and financial hardship.

The NPYF urged the district administration to keep strict vigilance on price inflation, ensuring that traders adhere to fair pricing, legal provisions, and market guidelines; to conduct regular inspections and monitoring of market areas to prevent artificial price hikes and exploitative trade behaviour.

It also stressed the need to establish a dedicated public grievances cell, accessible through phone and online platforms, where customers can report instances of overpricing, unfair trade practices, or harassment by traders.

Further, the front urged for prompt corrective action on complaints received, including issuing penalties, notices, or other legal measures against violators.

“We believe that proactive intervention by the authorities will not only protect consumers but also promote a healthy, transparent, and accountable market environment throughout the festive period.

“We call upon all traders and business establishments to uphold ethical practices and support the community during this important season of goodwill,” the statement added.
