Imphal, April 28 (EMN): With the support of North Eastern Council, the week-long Northeast regional sports week was formally inaugurated in Imphal on Thursday.
Altogether 674 players, coaches and officials of seven North-eastern states — Assam (108), Arunachal Pradesh (93), Nagaland (99), Manipur (120), Mizoram (92), Sikkim (94) and Tripura (68) — are taking part in the tournament which will be held in five disciplines – archery, badminton, boxing, football and table tennis.
On the first day of the tournament, which is being held as part of the 75th Independence Day celebrations, Assam’s men football team beat Sikkim team 5-1 goals. However, Assam women’s team lost to host Manipur 1-4 goals. The lone goal for Assam was scored by P Boro.
Chief de-mission of Assam, Swmdawn Muchahary informed that, ‘Assam players are participating in all the five disciplines’.
Meanwhile Nagaland’s women table tennis team — Nancy Oinam, Zelhouneinuo Rame, Kesinuo Dzuvichu Rame, Vichaduonuo Rane, Akuonuo K Yhome — entered the second round after defeating Sikkim team, while the state’s women football team defeated Tripura team 2-0 goals, according to Zhopovi Zecho, Chief de-mission of Nagaland.
“Our men’s football team could not take part as the Dr. T Ao football tourney is going on,” he informed.
Maisnam Meiraba Luwang, a young badminton talent who took part in many international tourneys, was the flag bearer of Manipur team in the day’s march past event.
The competitions are being organised at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, one of the advanced sports premises in the country, and Sports Authority of India, Northeastern regional centre, both located in and around Imphal.
