Kohima, Dec. 3 (EMN): BJP national spokesperson and recently appointed ‘prabhari’ (in-charge) of Nagaland, Nalin S Kohli on Thursday said that the Northeast is a special region for the party.

‘For BJP, Northeast is very special and we believe that this beautiful part of the country should be developed even more and be a growth engine,’ said Kohli, who is in Nagaland since Wednesday.

In a brief interaction with media persons in Kohima, Kohli confirmed that BJP national president Jagat Prakash Nadda would be visiting Nagaland this month.

He informed that he has made “courtesy calls” to the two heads of the state — governor and chief minister — and had held a series of meetings with the BJP workers at various levels. He will be leaving the state on Friday.

The visit was a ‘preliminary trip’ to discuss with state BJP president and the team about the preparations required for Nadda’s visit.

‘We will then see that he (Nadda) have a good visit to Nagaland and get a sense of Nagaland because Northeast is a special place for the BJP,’ said Kohli, adding that infrastructure development is the party’s major focus in the Northeast.

His primary work, Kohli said, is to work, strengthen and assist the party; and take the message of positive change and development to every part of Nagaland at the grassroots level.

When asked about his plans for Nagaland, he said that it is too early for him to share any sort of plan because it was his first visit here.

‘I still need time to understand and get to know the people here. Accordingly, the party will draw up plans,’ he said.

On Naga peace talks, he said that he is here as a representative of the party and therefore is not the right person to comment on the issue. He added that people in the government are talking about the issue in which he is “not involved”.

Asked whether Home Minister Amit Shah would visit Nagaland, he said that if any such visit is being planned, there will be advance notice to everybody and people would be aware of it.

BJP has recently inducted two leaders from the state to the national team. BJP legislator Mmhonlumo Kikon and former Nagaland BJP chief M Chuba Ao have been appointed as national spokesperson for BJP and in-charge of Mizoram as well as national vice president and in-charge of Meghalaya respectively.
