North East Christian University held its first Model United Nations session in Dimapur to mark United Nations Day.

DIMAPUR — The International Relations (IR) Programme of North East Christian University (NECU) organised its first NECU Model United Nations (MUN) on October 24 to mark United Nations Day in Dimapur.
According to an update, Dr. Hutoka Sumi, acting as the UN secretary-general, declared the General Assembly open.
The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Chibenthung Yanthan, who briefed the gathering on how the idea was conceptualised. Vivekananda Das, an MA student of the IR Programme, presented a brief history of the United Nations.
A total of ten students representing the United States, India, China, Japan, Russia, Singapore, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Germany spoke on various issues and proposed resolutions before the General Assembly. Witenthuibo Chawang, an alumnus of the NECU IR Programme, presided over the session as president of the General Assembly.

The recurring themes of the plenary session focused on the need for collective responsibility and global cooperation through multilateralism, peace, security, development, human rights, climate change, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, and respect for international law. Delegates from India, Japan, and Singapore raised concerns about the non-inclusive nature of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and called for India to be included as a permanent member.
Chan Seth, an MA student representing Myanmar, asserted the necessity of recognising the National United Government as the legitimate democratic government representing the people of Myanmar. Pongmei P Konyak, an MA student representing China, addressed ongoing global conflicts and supported the two-state solution to resolve the Israel-Palestinian issue.
The proposed resolutions from all delegates were put to a vote by the president of the General Assembly. The session concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Hutoka Sumi and a vote of thanks by Dr. Keneisenuo Solo, coordinator of the IR Programme.
