Normal water supply affected in Manipur state capital

Present condition of Imphal river in the state capital.


  • IMPHAL — Normal water supply in and around Manipur state capital has been badly affected “due to lean season and lowering of river water below the base level.”

  • The concerned officials of the state water supply agency- the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) has stated this in a public notice.

  • On Monday, the executive engineer of water supply maintenance division number II of the PHED informed the public that there would be no water supply in the area under the jurisdiction of Ningthempukhri and Canchipur water supply schemes due to lean season and lowering of river water below the base level.

  • “The office also requested the public to bear with the office till the situation improves,” says the directorate of Information and Public Relations in a press release.

  • It further regretted for causing inconvenience in its service to the general public.

  • Similarly, the executive engineer water supply maintenance division number-II of the PHED on April 4, in a separate press release, informed the public that there would be no water supply in the area under the jurisdiction of Singjamei Ward Number 17 that is Singjamei Sapam Leikai, Singjamei Leishangthem Leikai, Singjamei Oinam Leikai, Singjamei Okram Leikai, Singjamei Mayengbam Leikai, Singjamei Waikhom Leikai and Khongang Pheidekpi.

  • The office also requested the public to bear with the department till the situation improves. It expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to the public.

  • Additionally, PHED informed that the Chinga water treatment plant would be unable to supply water to the consumers under its jurisdiction due to unavailability of raw water.

  • “Normal water supply will resume as soon as raw water is available for treatment at the Chinga intake point,” it informed.

  • Around 17 water supply plants in and around Imphal hardly supply 70 million litre per day against its installed capacity of 101.3 million litre per day. There are 3.5 lakh population in Imphal areas. After all 79.59 percent (3,59,459 households) of the total households 4,51,619 in the state have tap water connections according to the official website of Jal Jeevan Mission.
