Non-Naga nominations to Dimapur Municipal Council unacceptable, DNSU reiterates

DIMAPUR — The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has reiterated its opposition to the nomination of non-Nagas to the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), warning the state government and legislature that it, along with its tribal units, will not allow any move that undermines the rights of the Nagas.

The student body stated that the matter was thoroughly deliberated at the first Union Assembly held on August 10, and the house was dismayed by the continued disregard for its concerns despite its previous appeals and the state government’s commitment to protect Naga rights.

“We remind the state government that Article 371(A) is not a mere decoration but a fundamental right secured through the blood and sacrifices of our predecessors. Any attempt to undermine this provision will be met with fierce resistance from the Naga people,” stated the DNSU.

It went on to say that the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2023, may have a provision for the nomination of individuals with special knowledge to the ULBs, but there is no dearth of qualified locals who can fill these roles.

“The inclusion of non-Nagas would be a betrayal of the trust placed in our leaders and a threat to our very way of life. Allowing outsiders to participate as decision-makers would be an act of self-destruction,” it stated.

The student body urged “the newly elected DMC members to prioritise the welfare of the Naga people, respecting our sentiments and maintaining peace and harmony,” while appealing to all non-locals to “respect our sentiments and refrain from interfering in our affairs.”

It went on to say that it will “take all necessary measures to protect our people and our way of life.”
