Noklak lads build ‘electric bike’ from scratch

Two lads from Noklak –Tumong and P Khuming — have built an electric bike under the “Innovative Noklak” initiative founded by Superintendent of Police (SP) Noklak, Pritpal Kaur.

Speaking to Eastern Mirror, Tumong, who has been a mechanic for about 10 years, shared that he used to dream of making an electric bike for about a year but due to various problems like materials, machines and finance, he was unable to pursue it.

Tumong added that he wanted to buy materials for the project, but they were not available in the town.

But when the SP assured to help him financially as well as materially, Tumong said he was able to complete the project in two months assisted by Khuming, who is a police personnel.

He shared that he did not receive any specific training on how to build the electric bike but through his own “idea”, he made it.

He added that he been studying the process of making the bike for a while and was therfore able to complete it in two months.

He explained that users can charge the bike to use it, while the duration of usage depends on the battery backup capacity. He added that it can even be charged using household electricity.

When asked if he will make more such electric bikes, he said he is planning to produce more in the future.

Tumong also shared that he has also opened his own shop in Noklak called ‘Electronic Repairing Centre’.

The electric bicycle was launched on November 9 by WON (Wheels of Nagas), Micro enterprise (MSME), in the presence of Hiazu Meru, Deputy Commissioner Noklak, and Pritpal Kaur, SP Noklak, on the theme “Not guns but machines”, an update stated.

During the launching programme, SP Noklak and the Punjabi community in Dimapur, helped in providing logistics, welding machines and other raw materials, it said.

Meru stated that ‘Noklak people have many talents,which should get polished’.

He encouraged the youths to work hard for the uplift of society, the statement said.

Kaur also urged the youth to make productive assets for the district instead of abusing drugs or other intoxicants. She said these (electric bike) are basic models, and later improvisations can be made with more learning.

Tumong stated that the electric bike has a maximum speed of 25 kmph and 250W. It is 4 feet 6 inches in length, and 3 feet 6 inches in height; and it can carry approximately 120 kg load.

A statement issued by the Nagaland Police said that other machines like cooking-cum-rying machine, oil-extracting machine and other low-cost machines for farmers have also been made Innovative Noklak.
