Agartala, Jan 4: There were no extremist-related incidents in the last two years in Tripura, but the hideouts of insurgents still remained in neighbouring Bangladesh, a top police officer said today.
“There were no extremist-related incidents in Tripura in the last two years. Combating insurgency in the state became possible due to the coordinated efforts of Tripura Police, BSF, CRPF, Assam Rifles and the overwhelming support from the people. But, some camps still exist in neighbouring Bangladesh,” state DGP K Nagraj told reporters.
Insurgency has ravaged the state for the last three decades.
Nagraj said the overall crime report had come down by 16 per cent in Tripura in 2016 as compared to the previous years.
“It is a matter of pride for Tripura Police that it is being recognised as a role model in containing insurgency,” he added.
“A detailed analysis shows that property-related offences were down by 17 per cent, crime against women by 21 per cent, physical offences by 11 per cent and motor accident cases by 14 per cent in 2016 as compared to the previous years,” the DGP said.
He said multi-pronged strategies such as opening new women police stations, setting up women helpdesks at all police stations, close monitoring and enhancing the women police force have contributed to reducing crime against women in the state.
