DIMAPUR — Opposition to the proposed installation of an Indian Air Force (IAF) mountain radar system at Pfutsero in Phek district intensified on Monday after the Naga National Council and the Federal Government of Nagaland (NNC/FGN) declared that it would not allow the project to proceed.
In a statement issued on Monday, the organisation stated that it would oppose the proposed installation not only at Pfutsero but across Nagaland.
“The Naga National Council and the Federal Government of Nagaland (NNC/FGN) will never allow the proposed installation of the aggressor’s Indian Air Force (IAF) Mountain Radar System not only at Pfutsero but also across the entire Nagaland,” the statement read.
The latest objection comes amid growing opposition from civil society organisations in the Chakhesang region over the proposed defence project under the Government of India’s high-altitude defence programme.
Earlier, the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO) had termed the proposal “wholly unacceptable in any form” and demanded that the project be halted and relocated outside Nagaland. The apex tribal body had cited concerns over public health, environmental impact, land rights and lack of public consultation.
