DIMAPUR — Nagaland Library Association (NLA) resolved to create awareness about library and recommitted to promote the professionalism of the library and information.
The resolution to this effect was taken during its general body meeting held on April 5 at the district library under the department of Art and Culture, Chümoukedima.
An update from the association stated that its president, Dr. Tali Imsong, in his welcome address, recounted the establishment of NLA in 1996 by a handful of young library professionals and the contributions of prominent Library Science faculty and librarians at that time. He also highlighted that the various activities of NLA over the last few decades was challenged by lack of library professionals and stated that the strength is increasing to hundreds at present times which is promising for the development of the association and the field.
He stated that the association has continued to strive irrespective of the hurdles and contributed in the constitution of the committee for the Nagaland Library Legislation Act by the department of Art and Culture, government of Nagaland adding that the drafting of the Act is underway.
Dr. T Temjen, deputy librarian at Nagaland University, Lumami, stated that the role of librarians is pertinent in the dissemination of not only information but also technology transfer. He asserted that the pandemic has driven digital and virtual scholarship at an accelerated pace which demanded the role of librarians in facilitating information and technology services.
On that account, he challenged the library professionals to be visible in the information user society and be in the forefront of changing times.
The association has elected new office bearers for the tenure 2023-2035 led by Niketu Siam as president, Vithou Meru as vice president, Alovi Zhimomi as general secretary, Hengoumang Hangsing as joint secretary, and Nechuli Jemu as treasurer.
It has also constituted advisory board members with Dr. T Temjen, Dr. Tali Imsong, Angel Meru, Mhonbemo Ngullie and Meseno Peseyie. The meeting concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by the outgoing general secretary, Mhonbemo Ngullie.
Altogether, 42 library professionals from various districts of Nagaland attended the meeting.
