Kohima, March 22 (EMN):
Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) passed two government bills — Nagaland Village and Tribal Councils (Fifth Amendment) bill (2022), and Nagaland Groundwater (regulation and control of development and management) bill (2020) on Tuesday.

The bills were introduced on the floor of the house on the second day of the 11th session of NLA on Monday and were passed through a voice vote on Tuesday.

Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio, introduced the Nagaland Village and Tribal Councils (Fifth Amendment) Bill, 2022, which seeks to amend the Nagaland Village and Tribal Council Act, 1978, and is expected to be extended to the whole of Nagaland. The Bill pointed out the need to change the qualification criteria for becoming a member of village council, to check the possibility of non-indigenous and non-permanent residents becoming a member of the council and so on.

Meanwhile, Minister for Geology and Mining, Soil and Water Conservation, V Kashiho Sangtam introduced the Nagaland Groundwater (regulation and control of development and management) Bill, 2020. Under the Bill, the main database on groundwater will be maintained including the check on permit for extraction and use.

The chief minister on Tuesday also introduced the ‘Nagaland Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (Fifth Amendment) Bill, 2022’ to be passed on March 24.
