Imphal, Feb 14: Around nine persons including six women were reported injured in poll related violence in Manipur’s Thoubal district on Tuesday.
As per the report, the incident took place while the police were trying to control a confrontation between the supporters of BJP and Congress over the holding of an election meeting at Lamdaibung area located in between Khangabok and Sangaiyumpham localities around 11.30 in the morning. Sources said the day’s incident took place after the supporters of BJP tried to prevent a public meeting of a Congress party candidate of the Khangabok constituency where Chief Minister’s son Okram Surjakumar is contesting on congress ticket and Th Jadumani on BJP ticket.The injured have been taken to hospital for further treatment.
With the state assembly elections is just 18 days away, the election campaign as well as other electioneering activities are on in full swing across the 60 assembly constituencies in Manipur since the past one week.
Meanwhile many intending have filed their nomination papers at their respective district election officer’s office across the state. As per reports from Chief Electoral Officer(CEO)’s office, 95 candidates have filed their nomination for the first phase(March 4) elections while 14 for second phase(March 8) till Monday.
57 candidates from Churachandpur district (30) Kangpokpi district (19), Tamenglong district(5) and Ukhrul district(3) representing different political parties have filed their nomination papers till the filing of this report on Tuesday. The CEO office is yet to issue the final nomination list for the first phase till 7pm.
