DIMAPUR, JANUARY 3

IN a suspected case of mass slaughter, nine decomposed bodies were recovered today from a gorge beyond 50 Puras area and east of Khuova River under Chumukedima village, in Dimapur district. The mass dumping of bodies was first reported by some labourers who smelt a foul smell emanating from the gorge at around 2:30 p.m. After the information, the police reached the spot at around 4 p.m. They were still in the area till the filing of this report at 11pm.Speaking to Eastern Mirror, chairman of Chumukedima village council Beituo Hama who had visited the site, said it was difficult to establish the identity of the deceased as the bodies were in a high state of decomposition and were beyond recognition.
Hama said the bodies were piled up one on top of the other and recovered from a 6-7 feet ravine east the Khuova river.
Police officials could not be reached for details except for one Police Station which only said police personnel were still at the spot trying to retrieve the bodies.
There is no information regarding the identities of the deceased, or whether the victims are locals or non locals. The darkness of the night and the decomposed state of the bodies have not allowed this identification.
However, the victims are said to be wearing civilian clothes.
