NIEPID conducts training for caregivers and parents

Dimapur, June 14 (EMN): National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (Divyangjan) from Secunderabad in Telangana, under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, government of India, conducted a one-day training on “Rehabilitation of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities” for caregivers and parents of children with disabilities in Kohima on June 13.

The training was organised in collaboration with the office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, government of Nagaland, and Cherry Blossom Society, Kohima, an update from Cherry Blossom Society stated.

Dr. Ravi Prakash Singh, officer in-charge and faculty in special education at NIEPID Regional Centre, Navi Mumbai, conducted the elaborative sessions on “Disabilities under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016,” “Role of family in rehabilitation,” and “Inclusion of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the light of National Education Policy 2020.” 

Also speaking on the occasion, Purnima Kayina, principal of Cherry Blossom Society, shared her views on the issues and challenges faced by the parents and families of children with disabilities during Covid-19 pandemic.

Cultural items were presented by the students with disabilities from Cherry Blossom Society. A total 86 parents and caregivers attended the programme.

National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (Divyangjan), Secunderabad, Telangana, in collaboration with the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, government of Nagaland, CIHSR, and Prodigal’s Home, conducted similar programme in Dimapur.

During the event, Dr. Ravi Prakash Singh spoke on “Disabilities under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, and “Early identification and intervention for children with disabilities,” Dr. Y Simpson conducted a session on “Role of family in rehabilitation.”

Dr. Sedevi, director of CIHSR, shared his views on the need of extending the rehabilitation services to persons with disabilities in Nagaland.
