Kohima, July 20 (EMN): Exactly 10 days after the National Highway 29 got completely cut off at Peducha on July 9, the road was reopened for vehicles to ply today at around 2 p.m. Blessed with pleasant weather for the last three/ four days, the GREF personnel and the labourers from the Gayatri Project Ltd pushed for the task with excavators and labourer force by utilising the dry days to their advantage. Ever since the highway got fully cut, the lighter vehicles have been plying the alternate routes of the Sechü Zubza–Peducha road via Kiruphema and the Peducha–Tsiesema road. However, the heavy laden trucks were stranded on both the sides of the highway. Though the road was made functional today, there is apprehension that landslides will occur again if heavy downpour continues in the next couple of days. More to this, the flow of heavy vehicles in wet conditions accelerates the process of soil erosion as the weight of the trucks makes the soil to become loose in the sinking portions. Talking to Eastern Mirror, one company supervisor from the Gayatri Project Ltd informed that the trucks were allowed to make its passage along with the lighter vehicles. The timely completion of the road has also come as a relief as there was apprehension from the public that prices of commodities could escalate in Kohima if the heavy laden trucks get stranded on the highway.
