NGOs organises workshop for differently abled persons in Diphu

Diphu, July 17 (EMN): Shishu Sarothi-Centre for Rehabilitation & Training for Multiple Disability, a Guwahati based NGO in collaboration with Jirsong Asong NGO organised a community level workshop on Monday at Jirsong Asong. Project Coordinator, Disability empowerment initiative of Sshishu Sarothi Saswati Barman, said the NGO is fully devoted in working for the multiple disability persons in Assam which is engages in education, health, advocacy, livelihood employment, providing scholarship for disabled students and creating awareness of the rights and laws of disabled persons.
‘Today’s workshop is stressed on giving awareness on the rights and laws of the disabled persons, the facilities available with the government and also to make them aware the latest Rights of Persons With Disability (RPWD), Act, 2016’, Barman said. She also told the disabled persons that the Jirsong Asong and Shishu Sarothi are working together for their cause.
Barman a local of Diphu town and now working with the Shishu Sarothi said their activities were spread in other districts of Assam, but in today’s workshop it was found that the differently abled persons of this district are still ignorant of their rights and facilities. The concerned department dealing with the disabled persons does only nominal things like giving away pension and scholarships to them.
There are much more things like creating awareness of their rights and facilities and providing livelihood to the disabled persons can be taken up, Barman told. “We have tie-up with the Jirsong Asong here to work with the disabled persons for their economic upliftment and in providing other cares to them,” said Barman.
Fr. Thankachen working with the disable persons said in the health component of Jirsong Asong has been taking up activities for the last five years in Rongmongve areas of Karbi Anglong in promoting awareness among the disabled persons of their rights and how to give linkage with the concerned government department the District Social Welfare department seeing to the welfare of disabled persons.More than 40 differently abled persons attended the workshop.
