DIPHU — With an aim to boost the living standards of the rural people, Amri Helping Hands Society (AHHS), a rural-based NGO has handed out their helping hands by implementing various livelihoods programmes for women empowerment in the rural areas of Amri and Chinthong block in West Karbi Anglong district of Assam.

Presently, AHHS is working with women weavers where 90 SHG members were given the training to establish small units post-training funded by NABARD.

The AHHS has also completed their training for 26 SHG members in Ginger processing (Ginger paste and ginger powder) which are already being sold in the market by village youth.

Speaking exclusively with Eastern Mirror, President AHHS, Binolin Phangchopi said that AHHS is an NGO working for holistic development and upliftment of the rural mass with the help and coordination from various government departments and individual collaborators.

‘It was a humble beginning where few educated, determined youths thought of giving the living standard a new look and since its formation, we have been working on different social issues that needs to be addressed,’ he said.

The AHHS NGO is based at Amkachi Village under Ulukunchi Post Office with Baithalangso Police Station in West Karbi Anglong district.

She said that AHHS is a powerful force that works to strengthen the community and improve the rural lives of the region. ‘We achieve this through the engagement of people who share a common mindset and support both local and global issues’, she said. 

AHHS which was set up in the year 2018, is registered under the Societies Registration Act, of 1860.

At present, AHHS is providing a Model Millet project with 50 beneficiaries funded by NABARD inorder to promote nutritious food millet with special emphasis to foxtail millet. She said all the necessary guidance and support are provided while credit linkages would be given to the farmers through the local banks.

‘When we talk of development, we need to mutually keep a tab on the underlying social issues and the direct impact it has on our society. We must identify problems from the grassroot and act and accordingly spreading awareness and generate concern among the mass,’ said the president.

“To empower women, we have been working with them since our inception,’ she said while stating that the women folks offers support when issues are addressed.

The AHHS has initiated over 30 programmes and plans to expand their projects to other blocks of West Karbi Anglong in coming days.

Some of the programmes include bamboo plantations, plantations of eri silkworm’s primary food Kesseru, training of women weavers, ginger processing and millet plantations. Eco-Tourism project is said to be in pipeline.
