New multi-purpose hall with 3200 seating capacity sanctioned at Viswema

A new multi-purpose hall at Viswema village in Kohima district is in the pipeline, a project that has been accorded by the government of India.

This was announced by the advisor for Youth Resources and Sport, Zale Neikha, on Saturday while addressing the platinum jubilee celebration of John Government Higher Secondary School (JGHSS) organised by the alumni association and school managing board.

The advisor maintained that the administrative approval for the said project was accorded by the government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and is currently under perusal for release of sanction.
Neikha informed that the site for the project was selected at John Govt.

Higher Secondary School, Viswema and he exuded confidence that it will serve to benefit the students and faculties of the school as well as the people of the area.

It was informed that the multi-purpose hall once constructed, would be the first of its kind in the state, which will have a stage area of 200 sq ft and seating capacity of 3200 persons during sporting events.

He informed that the capacity would further increase to 5000 persons during cultural and social events.

Neikha said, “With the fulfilment of this multipurpose hall to the youths, it will make accessible training facilities to proficient young sportspersons, and can also host important cultural and social events.”

Neikha pays honour to the pioneers of JGHSS

According to Neikha, the school in its 75 years’ journey has produced many scholars, officers and prominent personalities while paying his tributes to the pioneers of the school.

He told the gathering to remember the sacrifices made by the visionary pioneers of the school and all those people who have given their 'heads, their hearts and their wealth' 75 years ago, so that the institute becomes a centre of learning.

He maintained that the visionary and enlightened leaders of Japfuphimia and the generosity of John of Viswema village had made it possible for the school to prosper.

The advisor said that government employees from the area had contributed 10% of their salary for the school in its initial years. “Though most of them are not with us today, we are indebted to them,” he said.

He also urged the school authority and the management board to take certain measures and precautions to safeguard the properties of the school for the generations to come.

“On this big day, let us remember all the teachers who have served here from 1945 till date, because they have given their best to make us who we are today”, said Neikha.

Further, Neikha encouraged the teachers to give their best, for the growth and welfare of the school and most importantly for nurturing, moulding and upbringing of children despite of all the hiccups.

Meanwhile, he told the students to remember the sacrifices of the parents and teachers, and to work hard to be assets for the society.

In her keynote address, the principal of JGHSS, Dr. Chumbeni Kikon, highlighted briefly the history of the school. She informed that the school was established on March 5, 1945 when the Japfuphimia (mostly known as Southern Angami) felt the need of school education for their children after World War II.

The principal informed that the school was named after the land donor, founder of modern education in the Southern Angami area, John Angami. The school was first called John Institute from classes 1 to 6, which the government of Assam had taken over as a middle school on August 27, 1946.

The principal then informed that the government of Nagaland had taken the school as government high school in 1963 and became the third government high school in Nagaland next to Mayangnokcha and Ruzhukhrie Government High School.

Later, in the year 2014, the school was granted government higher secondary school status, informed Kikon.

Earlier the jubilee monolith was unveiled by the advisor, Zale Neikha in the presence of advisor for DUDA, Bongkhao Konyak among other dignitaries.
