MOREH, AUGUST 27
GOVERNOR Ashwani Kumar said the government is planning to establish a new bypass road from Kohima to ease traffic inflow in the region. The plan for the new road is mooted in view of the frequent traffic jam fuelled by the movement of Manipur-bound goods trucks in Kohima town.Interacting with the public leaders at Manipur’s border town Moreh, 110 km south of Imphal, at Moreh Trade Centre conference hall, Tuesday afternoon, Kumar underlined the need for better road and communication networks for the development of the region.
“The reason behind my visit to Moreh town is to see the problems being faced by the people by meeting them personally,” he said.
Stating that he was impressed with the market at Moreh, Kumar, who is also holding the additional charge as Manipur Governor, described the town as an international and cosmopolitan town.
The Governor, accompanied by his wife and district officials, visited the border town close on the heels of verifying the allegations arising out of the ongoing border fencing works along Manipur sector of Indo-Myanmar border.
Braving the seasonal drizzling, the Governor arrived at the border town around 11.30 am and drove straight to Indo-Myanmar border bridge to inspect the border pillar 77 and the proposed Integrated Check Post development site near Moreh Gate No. 1.
During their interaction with the Governor, the public leaders, including leaders of Hill Tribal Council, Meitei Council Moreh, Tamil Sangam, Meitei Muslim Council Moreh and Moreh Chamber of Commerce, urged him to address some of the grievances of the general public relating to water supply, border fencing works, communication facilities, highway expansion etc.
After giving them the audience, the Governor assured the public leaders that he will take up the matter with the authorities concerned once he returns to Imphal.
Tuesday’s visit was his second visit outside Imphal after he was sworn in as Governor of Manipur on July 29. Earlier, the Governor visited Kakching.
Governor’s secretary RK Nimai, Deputy Commissioner Chandel district Chittaranjan, DIG of police Kh Chandramani, Assam Rifles officers and district officials accompanied the Governor.
On Monday, a high-level state committee of Manipur led by Principal Secretary (Home) Dr J Suresh Babu inspected the alleged disputed areas of Govajang and Holenphai at Moreh as per the state government’s directive to verify the public outcry over the allegation of losing a large portion of land once the ongoing border fencing works is completed.
