GUWAHATI — As NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) steps into the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season with newfound confidence following their historic Durand Club victory last month, they face a “big responsibility” with heightened expectations from fans.

NorthEast United FC will begin their ISL 2024-25 campaign against Mohammedan SC at Kishore Bharati Krirangan, Kolkata, on September 16 at 7:30 pm. They will then face the ISL League champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant on September 23 at 7:30 pm.

The Highlanders defeated the defending ISL champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant in Durand Club on penalties in the final.

Drawing lessons from the recent victory, head coach of NEUFC Juan Pedro Benali emphasised that there are no small teams to play against. He asserted that with determination and effort, they could defeat any team, while also stressing the importance of staying humble.

At media day hosted by the club in Guwahati on Thursday, Benali stated that the current focus is on the first game against Mohammedan SC, while addressing journalists from north-eastern states at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Guwahati.

Benali further stated that while the expectation from the fans will always be present and is welcomed, the team aims to maintain confidence while keeping their feet on the ground.

The club will play its opening match against Mohammedan SC at Kishore Bharati Krirangan, Kolkata, on September 16. He mentioned that they are aware of the significant responsibility they carry and that he is starting this ISL season with a very fresh mindset.

NEUFC CEO Mandar Tamhane expressed that the Durand Cup success is a testament to the strong mentality of the Highlanders. He noted that they overcame the odds to clinch the title and suggested that the result would inspire several teams in the Indian football landscape.

The club will play their first home game on September 29 at 7:30 pm against Kerala Blasters.

The ISL 2024-25 season will kick off on September 13 with a match between Mohun Bagan and ISL Cup winners Mumbai City FC at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) on Friday, September 13, at 7:30 pm.

The Indian Super League will be streamed live for free on JioCinema in English, Hindi, Bengali, and Malayalam. It will also be broadcast live on Sports 18-3 (in English, Hindi, Bengali, and Malayalam) and Asianet Plus (in Malayalam). Additionally, select ISL matches will be broadcast live on Sports 18-1, Sports 18-2, and Sports 18-Khel.

Goalkeeping is a challenge, says Gurmeet Singh

Meanwhile, Gurmeet Singh, the Golden Glove winner of the Durand Cup 2024 from the club, shared his views on being a goalkeeper with Eastern Mirror.

He said that the goalkeeper position is very challenging, as one is judged at every moment. He noted that a single mistake can significantly impact the game, making it a difficult role. However, he mentioned that he enjoys the pressure and is enjoying the goalkeeping experience.

In his message to aspiring goalkeepers, he encouraged them to trust themselves and continue working hard.
