DIMAPUR — The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), an umbrella body of major student bodies in the Northeast region, will observe December 11 as a “black day” in all the important places of all the seven states, to mark its continued opposition against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019.
In a press release issued on Friday, NESO stated that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed by the parliament despite the relentless opposition of the indigenous peoples of the Northeast.
It said that NESO has declared that December 11 will always be remembered as a black day for the whole of the Northeast and in continuation of this, black flags and black banners will be displayed in all the important places of all the seven states on Dec. 11.
This observation is to give a message to the government that the people in the region are against CAA. At the same time, it is to remind the people about “yet another political injustice that the Government of India perpetrated against the indigenous peoples of the Northeast.”
“So NESO, calls upon all the people of the North East to support this observation and at the same time to keep on fighting for the just cause which is our God given right,” the release stated.
NESO comprises of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF), All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Garo Students’ Union (GSU) and All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU).
