NESO demands security, safety of NE people in Delhi, NCR

PTI Guwahati, February 14 [dropcap]T[/dropcap]he North East Students Organisation today demonstrated before the Raj Bhavan here demanding justice for Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Tania and security and safety to the northeast people in Delhi and the NCR region. The members of the apex body of student organizations in the North East also condemned the rape in Munirka in Delhi on February 7 of a minor girl from Mizoram settled in Manipur, during the protests this morning. The protesters shouted slogans and held up placards reading ‘PM’s silence is unhelpful’, ‘Hang the killers of Nido’, ‘We need anti-racism law’, ‘Stop Racism and racial discrimination’, ‘Stop atrocities against North-East students in Delhi’. NESO chairman Samuel Jeora, NESO and AASU adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharjee among other student leaders demanded that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who represented Assam and the region in Parliament, to ensure security and safety of the people of the North East in Delhi and NCR region.They also said that NESO would soon meet the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister on issues of North East students in Delhi and NCR region. MZP sends memorandum to President Aizawl: Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) or the Mizo students association today submitted a memorandum of the North East Students Organisation (NESO) to President Pranab Mukherjee seeking his intervention in the attacks against the people of the North East in Delhi. NESO urged the Centre to take effective measures by the appropriate authorities which could give mental, social and physical security to the students and people of the North Eastern region studying and residing in Delhi and other parts of India, the memorandum said. The memorandum, narrating the attacks on north easterners said that on January 29, a student from Arunachal Pradesh Nido Tania was beaten to death. “We demand proper and swift high level enquiry of the incident and to give exemplary punishment to the people involved,” it said. Two women belonging to the Thangkhul Naga community were assaulted, while a minor girl from Manipur was raped at Munirka on February eight. Two Manipur boys were assaulted on February 10. Such incidents of assault and molestation were happening on a frequent basis resulting in a feeling of insecurity, especially among women, the memorandum said. The MZP leaders handed over the memorandum to state Governor Vakkom Purushothaman.
