Dimapur, Dec. 8(EMN): Forty-eight graduating students of North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSER) were felicitated at the 5th Graduation Day programme at Bishop’s House in Dimapur on December 8.
Former Member of Parliament Apok Jamir, who was the special guest for the programme, shared that education in Nagaland and the statistics of literacy rates are 'very impressive' with 79.55% standing at the 15th place in India as per 2011 census.
However, he questioned if the attractive statistics that is showcased justifies the prevailing situation in Nagaland.
"What is in the paper and what is the reality are the areas of concern which need to be put together or which need to come together to form a healthy society," he added.
He also mentioned that the world today is confronted by many challenges; and Covid-19 pandemic is one among the biggest challenges, 'which has also taught the world that there is more than wealth and political power'.
He opined that the "priority in life has to be along with God and without Him life is meaningless, and the pandemic has shown us to go back to our roots where we have to get closer to our creator”.
He further appealed to the students to put their heart and soul to bring transformation in the society.
Fr. CP Anto, principal of NEISSER, also said that "today we have forgotten the diversity, culture and the secularism is at stake and therefore we need people who are committed to preserve and promote peace with sound theories and practicum."
"The challenge of yesterday was how to educate our youth but today our concern is what to do with educated youths, which is a serious concern.
"There can be no lasting peace and progressive qualitative development without well organised community and community development, he added.
Rev. James Thoppil, Bishop of Kohima Diocese, also encouraged the students to go with strong conviction and commitment to bring changes in Naga society, and also to create an ambience of peace for development.
Sunglong Y Phom won the Best Student award 2020 while the Gender Champion certificate was given to Toviholi and Lohe Ashuziio, representing a team of 17 gender champions, for ensuring both boys and girls experience equality and equity in the campus and outside.
