Neiphiu Rio says Nagaland's partnership with France's Cooperl will modernise pig farming, strengthen rural livelihoods and promote indigenous breeds
DIMAPUR — Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Tuesday described the newly signed partnership between the Government of Nagaland and French agri-food cooperative Cooperl as a landmark initiative that will modernise the state's pig farming sector, strengthen rural livelihoods and deepen economic cooperation between Nagaland and France.
In a series of posts on X following the exchange of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Rio said the agreement marked the beginning of a partnership founded on mutual trust, shared aspirations and a commitment to sustainable development.
He thanked French Ambassador to India Thierry Mathou, the government of France and the leadership of Cooperl for joining hands with Nagaland in the initiative.
Highlighting the significance of the agreement, Rio said Nagaland has long been recognised as one of India's leading pig-rearing states, where pig farming is deeply intertwined with the state's culture, economy and rural livelihoods.

According to him, the partnership with Cooperl presents an opportunity to modernise the sector through scientific breeding, improved production systems and the adoption of global best practices.
He also said the collaboration would focus on building local capacity by training farmers, veterinarians and technical professionals, while establishing a dedicated centre for the protection and promotion of Nagaland's indigenous pig breeds.
Rio further described the agreement as an example of cultural diplomacy translating into meaningful economic cooperation, pointing out that France's participation as the partner country at the Hornbill Festival 2025 had helped build friendships, strengthen mutual confidence and open new avenues for collaboration between Nagaland and France.
