Lok Sabha MP from Nagaland Neiphiu Rio called upon the communities on both sides of the border to maintain friendly relations between neighbors. He was addressing the gathering at the Nagaland-Assam Friendship meet at Moriani. The Nagaland MP was the chief guest while Lok Sabha MP from Assam Gaurav Gogoi was the guest of honour. A football match was played between Nagaland Police and Assam Police to commemorate the friendship meeting. The cultural performance preceded the match where performers belonging to local communities and village representatives from both Assam and Nagaland participated.
In his address, the Nagaland MP called upon the communities on both sides of the border to maintain friendly relations between neighbors. He stated that Nagas and Assamese people have been neighbours since times immemorial and will continue to be neighbors for all times to come and therefore it was in the mutual interest and benefit of both the states to have cordial and healthy relationship. Rio regretted that border disputes were being addressed in courts and hoped that out of court settlements would be the way forward. Rio called for more people-to-people contact, regular cultural exchanges and maintenance of cordial relationship in the border regions so that both communities would benefit in a mutual manner.
The guest of honour, Gaurav Gogoi also appealed to the people living in the border regions to maintain peace and tranquility for mutual benefit. He appreciated the organizers for initiating the landmark programme and hope that such exchanges would bring the people closer in a more positive environment.
The Lok Sabha MP was accompanied by a host of MLAs, civil society leaders and senior officers of the State Government.
