Dimapur, July 19 (EMN): The North East Initiative Development Agency (NEIDA), an associate organisation of the Tata Trusts, organised a two-day exposure-cum- training at Centre Institute of Horticulture (CIH), Medziphema, on July 14 and 15.
NEIDA, in a press release, informed that 10 orchard farmers from Sendenyu and Thongsunyu villages under Tseminyu district participated in the exposure tour-cum-training.
It stated that horticulturist specialists including Dr. Moa, AK Singh, Meribeni Shitiri and Mhasizotou, conducted theory and practical classes on orchard management of Khasi mandarin, litchi, papaya and mango. An interactive session was also held with the horticulture specialist, NEIDA informed.
NEIDA is implementing the project titled “Integrated Tribal Development Programme (ITDP)” under Tseminyu block with support from National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). The project period is for six years covering three villages namely Sendenyu, New Sendenyu and Thongsunyu villages under the newly formed district Tseminyu.
According to NEIDA, the project aims to help 200 tribal farmers, who are living below the poverty line and do not have sufficient means of livelihood through developing orchard “WADI” around their houses and in their land to increase the family income and reduction of poverty.
About 200 acres of orchard has been established under the project and 12 water harvesting tank constructed, it informed. In addition, a farmers’ producer organisation called ‘Njon Negihas’ was formed with 127shareholders, it added.
NABARD is also funding NEIDA to implement integrated livelihood promotion through Wadi in Pungro block of Kiphire district covering 200 households across 4 villages in orchard development, the release added.
