North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) and North-Eastern Hill University Non-Teaching Staff Association (NEHUNSA) have asked the President of India, Prime minister of India, and the Minister for Human Resource Development to appoint a regular vice chancellor. The two organizations issued a copy of a letter addressed to the three, on Sunday. “North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, is running without a regular Vice-Chancellor for the last one year and four months. Prof. AN Rai, the then Vice-Chancellor left NEHU in the month of June, 2013. Since then Prof. P. Shukla, the senior most professor is working as acting vice-chancellor,” the NEHUTA and NEHUNSA stated in their memorandum.
“In the absence of most important statutory officers i.e., Vice-Chancellor, Registrar and Finance Officer in NEHU, the day to day functioning of the university has been seriously hampered. it appears that the MHRD, Government of India, has failed to take cognizance of our problems by delaying the appointment of a regular Vice-Chancellor,” the letter stated. The NEHU members have asked the government to take immediate steps to appoint a “good, honest, efficient, dynamic and learned educationist” as regular vice-chancellor of NEHU.
