DIMAPUR — NECTAR project under the School Education department on Wednesday gave away laptops to 249 government high schools and 55 government higher secondary schools, district education offices (DEO) and sub-divisional education offices (SDEO) during a programme held at the Directorate of School Education (DoSE).
The advisor of School Education and SCERT, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, who attended the event as the special guest, handed over the laptops to schools and department offices.
An update from the department stated that laptops were also issued to the SCERT, 8 DIET under SCERT, NBSE office and administrative offices under the School Education department.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Yhome informed that the first component of the NECTAR project was to improve the governance system and added that the distribution of laptops was part of that initiative.
According to him, the idea was to streamline the governance system by studying the administrative roles and structure of governance in the education system. He also stated that there is a plan to come up with the Nagaland Education Service and the Nagaland Education Administrative Service.
He informed that the data of teachers and employees collected through the teachers attendance monitoring system was a huge achievement that would enable the department to understand many aspects such as appointment and retirement, which in turn, would help in the planning process.
The advisor further stated that despite the challenges, the department needs to initiate the transition to a data-driven and data-intensive process in order to improve the governance system.
In her welcome address, the joint secretary of School Education and deputy project director of NECTAR, Avelu Ruho, encouraged all the schools and establishments to utilise the laptops for supporting the maintenance of data and the effective management of schools. She urged them to retain the laptop at the schools and establishments so that it serves their ICT needs effectively.
She further informed that the remaining schools from all the districts would be given laptops on or before September 20 at the NECTAR office.

The principal director of School Education and NECTAR project director, Thavaseelan K, stated that laptops are meant for all the schools and establishments under the department of School Education.
He set the context by stating that the laptops would help achieve the objectives of the NECTAR project such as to enhance the governance of schools across Nagaland and to improve teaching practices and learning environment in select school complexes.
He further stated that the education management information system, among other initiatives of the project, would receive a boost through the enhanced digital infrastructure.
