NE veterans’ badminton tourney begins in Dimapur

Dimapur, Nov. 1: The 2nd North East Masters (Veteran) Championship 2018 got underway at the Dimapur District Badminton Association (DDBA) Indoor Stadium at United Colony, Nagarjan in Dimapur. The tournament is organised and funded by Victor, Delhi for Northeast states in India. The opening session had the finance commissioner of Nagaland Temjen Toy as the special guest.
The event is scheduled to be held from Nov. 1 to 3rd at the DDBA Indoor Stadium, Dimapur. Altogether, 99 teams comprising 197 players from five states—Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Nagaland —and one team from Kolkata are competing in the championship.
The events are scheduled to be held in five categories: Men’s Veteran 75+, Men’s Veteran 85+, Men’s Veteran 95+, Men’s Veteran 105+, and Mixed Doubles. In mixed doubles, a male player should be above 45 years of age, whereas, a female above 19.
Nagaland has the largest number of teams with 74, followed by Assam with 15. Meghalaya has five teams with Manipur three, and one team each from Arunachal Pradesh and Kolkata.
The closing ceremony of the tournament will be conducted on Sat. Nov. 3, during which the special guest, Temjen Toy will address the gathering.
The opening day witnessed a contest of 58 matches, with the finals scheduled to be played on Nov. 3.
