NE tribes celebrate Chavang Kut in Delhi

The organisers issued a press release on Sunday offering updates about the event. The chief guest of the programme was Nemcha Kipgen, minister of Social Welfare and Cooperation, govt. of Manipur. Addressing the gathering, she talked about the importance of unity to attain peace and for any development to take place in the society. Retired deputy secretary, Ginkhomang Simte also addressed the gathering, the updates stated. He explained to the gathering the significance of Kut and how it was celebrated during their forefathers’ times. The guest of honour for the event, Dr. Pauthang Haokip of the Jawaharlal Nehru University explained the importance of language to keep one’s cultural intact, the updates stated. ‘He pointed out that language is one’s identity and losing one’s mother tongue means losing the culture of one’s identity,’ the organisers stated. The entertainment session of the event saw performances from Kut Band, besides a beauty pageant for the title of Chavang Lanu, an ‘equivalent title to Miss Kut.’ The coveted title ‘Chavang Lanu’ was given to Evelyn Vahboi. The first runner-up and second runner-up prizes were won by Phahoithem and Nemneikim, the organisers informed. Three sub-title prizes namely Best Catwalk, Best Traditional Attire and Miss Personality were begged by Bisola Zaineithem, Mercy Ngahhoilhing and Rosy Tingneichin, in that order. The Chavang Lanu title holder won prize money of INR 30,000; the first runner-up and second runner up winners received INR 20,000 and INR 10,000. All the sub-title winners were awarded INR 5,000 each, the updates added.
