A five member delegation of Nagaland Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM) attended an international workshop on technology transfer on beekeeping, Meliponiculture and Honey Festival (Api Expo 2014) from February 24 to March 2 at Bangalore. The week long workshop was jointly organized by Bangalore University, Department of Horticulture, Government of Karnataka, and National Horticulture Mission (Karnataka State) in association with National Bee Board, ICAR, Canara bank, and a host of other sponsors.
The workshop was attended by a host of bee scientists, university professors, beekeepers, policy makers, honey traders, government officials and organizations involved in the beekeeping and honey sector. It witnessed a wide range of new leanings and deliberations on research findings through technical paper presentations made by noted bee scientists and researchers from India and countries like USA, South Korea, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. Field visits to Bee Tree at Ramagovindapura and practical demonstrations at bee farms were also made by the delegates of the workshop.
A paper presentation titled “An overview of beekeeping in Nagaland,” delivered by Team Leader NBHM, Wonchio Odyuo, was well appreciated by the participants at the workshop, which bagged the award for best paper presentation from the state wise presentations. A keen interest for collaborative research studies on the diversity of bee species in Nagaland was shared by many participating scientists, also a strong desire to market ‘Nagaland Honey; by niche honey traders were highlights of the Team NBHM’s participation at the workshop.
Among the list of recommendations/ resolutions adopted by the participants to be submitted to the GOI included a specific recommendation – that the mission mode undertaking of the Nagaland Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM) be emulated as a model pilot programme by other NE states and by the rest of the country.
