Wokha district and Government Polytechnic Kohima observe National Voters’ Day 2026. Officials stress democratic participation and the power of voting.

DIMAPUR — National Voters’ Day 2026 on the theme “My India, my vote”, was observed across the state on Saturday.
Wokha district joined the rest of the nation in celebrating National Voters’ Day at the DC’s Conference Hall.
According to a DIPR report, delivering the keynote address, Renbomo Ezung, additional deputy commissioner of Wokha, spoke on the inception of the National Voters’ Day and its significance in strengthening democratic principles.
He stressed the importance of voting as both a right and a duty and urged citizens to contribute actively to the democratic process through awareness and participation.
Merilo M Kikon, District SVEEP Icon, in her speech, highlighted how each vote carries the power to bring change, stressing the role of citizens in electing the right leaders and shaping the collective future.

As part of the celebration, the Best Booth Level Officer Awards were presented to outstanding officers from each assembly constituency (AC): N Zubemo Lotha (37th AC), David Tsopoe (38th AC), Thungchamo Kithan (39th AC), and Mhonchan Lotha (40th AC).
The programme also included the felicitation of new voters, adhering to the inclusion of fresh voices in the democratic process. The Voters’ Pledge was administered by Thepfuzakie Sanchu, EAC Wokha, reaffirming the commitment of citizens to uphold democratic values.
Government Polytechnic Kohima (GPK) observed the National Voters' Day 2026 at the institution's auditorium on Saturday. Although National Voters' Day is officially celebrated on January 25 each year to mark the foundation of the Election Commission of India, GPK held the event early, as the official date falls on a Sunday.
A painting competition based on the theme saw participation from students. The winners were awarded cash prizes and certificates of merit for their creative depictions of electoral responsibility. The winners were Seketonü Sale (1st), Livina Awomi (2nd), and Rosy Masahary (3rd).
N Yibenthung Tungoe, senior lecturer (CSE) and event coordinator, delivered a speech on the significance of the day. He stressed that exercising one's right to vote is a fundamental constitutional duty and urged recently eligible students to enroll in the electoral rolls immediately.
Tungoe stressed the importance of adult franchise in electing qualified leaders and reminded students that their participation directly decides the future of their own constituencies, the state government and the Government of India.
The Department of Political Science of MGM College in Dimapur organised a seminar to observe National Voters’ Day at the college auditorium on Saturday.
Kailang Phon, assistant professor, Department of Political Science, delivered a lecture highlighting the history, significance, and objectives of National Voters’ Day. He elaborated on why the day is celebrated in India, the importance of voting in a democracy, and the need to create awareness among citizens, especially young voters.
Phon stressed that the primary objective of celebrating National Voters’ Day is to instil a sense of responsibility among staff and students to participate actively in the electoral process and thereby strengthen democratic values. He encouraged students to exercise their fundamental right to vote and become responsible and informed citizens of the nation.
A total of 50 students and three faculty members from the Department of Political Science participated in the seminar. At the conclusion of the programme, all students and faculty members took the Voters’ Pledge, which was led by Poiwang Konyak, assistant professor, Department of Political Science.
