Death toll in Mumbai building collapse mounts to 33
Mumbai, Sep. 1 (PTI): Thirty-three people were killed in the collapse of a 117-year-old building in the congested Bhendi Bazaar area in south Mumbai with nine more bodies being pulled out of the debris overnight, fire brigade officials said today. They said nine more bodies were pulled out from the debris in the overnight search and rescue operations. The deceased included 24 men and nine women. The officials said that efforts were underway to rescue more people who might be trapped in the debris of the building that collapsed yesterday.
Delhi to get 2,000 new buses
New Delhi, Sep. 1 (IANS): The Delhi government on Friday decided to purchase 2,000 standard floor, non-AC buses, Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot said. No buses have been added to the capital’s public transport system in the past four years. Of the 2,000 buses, 1,000 will be with the state-run Delhi Transport Corp (DTC) and 1,000 will be cluster buses, said Gahlot. The cluster buses will arrive in 10 months and DTC buses in 12 months. The Minister said the government was also planning to introduce mini buses.
Two arrested for posting video hurting religious sentiments
Muzaffarnagar, Sep. 1 (PTI): Two people have been arrested in Kawal village here for allegedly posting a video hurting religious sentiments on social media, a police official said today. A case was registered against the two after protests by some activists over the issue, after which they were arrested, Circle Officer SKS Pratap said. It was in Kawal village in 2013 that an incident of harassment spiralled into one of India’s deadliest riots. It left 63 dead and over 50,000 displaced.
1984 riots:SC panel to examine SIT decision to close 199 cases
New Delhi, Sep. 1 (PTI): The Supreme Court has constituted a supervisory body comprising two of its former judges to examine whether a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was justified in closing 199 cases relating to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The apex court said the supervisory body, comprising its two former judges, Justice J M Panchal and Justice K S P Radhakrishnan, would start functioning from September 5 and submit its report within three months. It said the supervisory body would scrutinise the SIT’s decision to close 199 riots related cases and also examine whether it was justified. The bench fixed the matter for hearing on December 6 and directed that the records related to the 199 cases, which were placed before it in a sealed cover, be produced before the supervisory body.
