Nagaland’s Avilie Zuyie wins double gold at national armwrestling championship

KOHIMA — Twenty-year-old Avilie Zuyie from Nagaland secured two gold medals at the National Armwrestling and Para Armwrestling Championship 2024 held in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

He clinched the gold medals on both left and right arms in the 90 kg category in the youth men’s division. Zuyie also came in second place in the overall youth champions of champions category.

With these wins, Zuyie has been selected to represent India in the World Armwrestling Championships 2024, which will be held in Moldova, Europe.

Speaking on his achievement, team captain and founder of Naga Arm-Benders, Neli Dominic, said Zuyie’s journey is a testament to his dedication and pursuit of excellence in the sport, while Zuyie expressed gratitude for the encouragement and guidance provided by his parents, teammates, and team captain.

Hailing from Rusoma village in Kohima district, Zuyie secured the fourth position on the left arm at the World Armwrestling Championship 2023 held in Malaysia. He was also the national champion in the 86 kg category (both left and right arms) in the youth men’s division at the 3rd National Armwrestling Championship in 2023.

The National Armwrestling and Para Armwrestling Championship 2024 was held in Nagpur, Maharashtra, from June 6 to 10.

The People’s Armwrestling Federation India presented the 2024 championship, which was organised by the Maharashtra Arm Wrestling Association, in which a total of eight Nagaland athletes competed.
