KOHIMA — Nagaland wrestler Rokuokehie Khawakhrie, who won the lone medal for team India at the International Belt Wrestling Grand Prix held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, returned home on Friday.

The 26-year-old wrestler, a native of Mezoma village, won bronze medal in 70 kg category at the mega event on April 29.

Expressing satisfaction at his performance in the event, Khawakhrie told Eastern Mirror that competing with formidable opponents throughout the tournament was challenging.

“I had a good experience. Other wrestlers were very tough. I won the medal not because I am good, but it’s all because of God’s assistance,” said Khawakhrie, who secured the bronze after defeating a formidable opponent from the host country.

In terms of mental and physical preparation for the demanding competition, Khawakhrie said that his training schedule involved a blend of rural life activities such as agricultural work. Pointing out that there is no gym in his village, he said keeps himself fit by exercising during free time and engaging in casual wrestling sessions with friends.

The biggest challenge he identified during the outing in Kyrgyzstan was the need to intensify training significantly, as the competitors from other countries were ahead in terms of both preparation and skill.

Nagas often claim that “wrestling is in their blood” but such attitudes and complacency could hinder their ability to compete on bigger state, he pointed out, while emphasizing the need for rigorous training. “We need to train very hard,” he added.

Regarding his future plans, he said that he would put in double efforts in terms of practice — enhance his flexibility and study the techniques of athletes from other countries.

He underscored the importance of one’s weight through regular exercise and strict dietary habits for optimal performance in the sport, drawing his own experience.

He also acknowledged the Naga Wrestling Association (NWA), All India Traditional Wrestling and Pankration Federation (AITWPF), Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA) and the Chief Minister of Nagaland for their support, enabling him and his teammates to participate in the prestigious world event.

It may be recalled that the executives of the Western Angami Youth Organisation (WAYO) had earlier welcomed the team of wrestlers and officials at Green Hills restaurant Peducha in Kohima. While congratulating the team, WAYO president Nitolie Peseyie urged them to strive for greater accomplishments and continue bringing laurels to themselves, their state and their country.

He also said that the achievements and successes of the team would serve as an inspiration for upcoming wrestlers, potentially paving the way for further triumphs on the international stage.

A total of seven wrestlers had represented the country at International Belt Wrestling Grand Prix, and they included: Nlumarai (-80 kg), Kezhaseluo-o Pienyü (+100 kg), Venuzo Dhawhuo (+100 kg), Sai Shankar Katta (+100 kg), Sudhir Pundekar (-90 kg) besides Rokuokehie Khawakhrie (-70 kg). Vekhonielu Curhah (-55 kg) was the lone female wrestler from the Indian team to compete in the event featuring seven countries in Kyrgyzstan.

Officials, who accompanied the wrestlers included Omarmukhtar Tamboli, President of AITWPF; Shailendra K Pathak, Gen. Secy. of AITWPF; Surhoneyi Soho, Coach of AITWPF; Abu Metha, Secretary General of NOA; Hiabe Zeliang, President of NWA; Neivikuolie Khatsu, Asst. Gen. Secy. of NOA; and Vilekho Bio, Gen. Secy. of NWA.
