Nagaland women among lowest alcohol consumers in India

Women in Nagaland are among the second lowest alcohol consumers in India — along with states like Goa, Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka — with only 0.1% of women aged between 15-54 years consuming alcohol.

According to Health and Family Welfare statistics in India 2019-2020, states like Chandigarh and Lakshadweep have 0% women aged 15-54 who consume alcohol, while Assam is on top of the chart with 26.3 % of women consuming alcohol.

As per reports on indicators on alcohol consumption and tobacco use by women and men, it stated that in Nagaland, 22.3% of men aged between 15 and 54 consume alcohol and 38.8% of men aged between 15-49 years consume alcohol, while Lakshadweep has the lowest rate with 4.9% and 5.4% respectively.

Assam has the highest percentage of men aged 15-54 years who consume alcohol with 59.4% and Arunachal Pradesh has the highest with 59.9% of men aged 15-49 who consume alcohol.

Ironically, among the 0.1% of women who consume alcohol, Nagaland has the highest percentage of women who consume alcohol about once a week with 65.5%, and men from Goa has the highest percentage with 59.3%. The report also stated that in Nagaland, 46.4% of men from among those who consume alcohol drink about once a week.

The report also stated that in Nagaland, 1.3% of women and 17.6% of men aged 15-49 years use tobacco. Across the country, West Bengal has the highest percentage of women tobacco users with 59.2% and men with 80.4%.
