Nagaland wins 18 medals at National Traditional Wrestling Championship 2023-2024

KOHIMA — Nagaland shone at the recently concluded National Traditional Wrestling Championship 2023-2024, as wrestlers from the state won the second runner-up title at the event by taking home a total of 18 medals, including six gold, four silver and eight bronze.

All the medals were won in belt and mas wrestling categories.

The event was held at Talkatora Indoor Stadium, New Delhi, from December 31 to January 2, and organised by the Traditional Wrestling Indian Association (TWIA).

Kezhaseluo-o Pienyü (100 kg plus) and Neizosietuo Kire (90-100kg) won two gold medals each in both belt wrestling and mas wrestling.

Vizovolie Rame (70-80 kg) won a gold medal in belt wrestling and a bronze in mas wrestling, while Menuosetuo Yiese (125 kg) won gold in mas wrestling.

Menguzo Khezhie (60-70 kg) struck silver in belt and bronze in mas wrestling, while Keviser Dzüvichü (100 kg plus) won silver in both belt and mas wrestling, and Dziesevizo Kire (80-90kg) won silver in mas wrestling.

Nouletuo Rame (60-70 kg) secured bronze medals in belt and mas wrestling, while Khriekethozo Keretsú (80-90 kg) won a bronze each in both categories; Kevisalie Kire (70-80kg) won bronze in mas wrestling and Vizakietuo Suohu (90-100 kg) secured bronze in belt wrestling.

The gold medalists have been selected to represent India at the Asian Games, while the silver and bronze medallists will have to go for trials.

The coaches for the Nagaland team were Neilhoukholie Kire and Vimhalie Pienyú; players’ assistant was Mhalelhoulie Khruomo; managing director – Kezhalelie Keretsú; and team manager – Khriesazo Liezietsu.

It may be mentioned that Kezhalelie Keretsú was elected President of Traditional Belt Wrestling of India, Nagaland unit.
