KIPHIRE — A campaign on prevention and combating child trafficking, targeting 100 bordering and adjoining districts of India, was held in Kiphire on Friday.
Resource person Topang L Jamir, an advocate at the Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench, highlighted the severity of human trafficking by citing UN reports in 2021 that 50 million people are victims of modern slavery daily.
He alluded to Bollywood movies like ‘Slumdog Millionaire,’ ‘Gangubai’ and ‘Dungi’ to illustrate the reality of human trafficking.
Emphasising that human trafficking is modern-day slavery, Jamir said that Nagaland too is vulnerable to human trafficking due to poverty, lack of awareness, and unemployment. He shared examples of how those factors lead to child trafficking including domestic helpers being exploited.
The campaign categorised human trafficking into sex abuse (pornography, prostitution) and non-sex abuse (child labour, organ transplant and drug smuggling).
Vithalietuo Kire, UBI and officer in charge of Kiphire police station, briefed the audience on the anti-human trafficking units introduced by the MHA in 2009, which he said are also functioning in all four police stations under Kiphire district.
The additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Kiphire, Robin, has warned of the dangerous trend of children being lured with false promises, often by family members or relatives. He stressed the need to spread awareness, especially in rural areas to prevent child trafficking.
The sensitisation programme was organised by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, State Commission for Protection of Child Rights and district administration of Kiphire, in collaboration with Beti Bachao, Mission Shakti DHEW, SAMPOORNATA Abhiyan, Childline Kiphire and Sakhi One Stop Centre.
The programme was chaired by Tsosing, OSC counselor, and the vote of thanks was delivered by NS Khaikho, district child protection officer, Kiphire.
