KOHIMA — Nagaland shuttlers shone at the 2nd Bhutan Open Badminton Championship 2024, held at the Phuntsholing Sports Complex under the auspices of the Bhutan Badminton Federation, from May 2 to the 5th, winning two gold medals, including a silver.

Riku Khape from Nagaland won gold in men’s singles category by outplaying his opponent from Assam. Zhakuo Seyie and Ekumyala also secured gold in mixed doubles category, by defeating their opponents from Nepal.

In women’s doubles category, Narola Jati and Ekumyala won silver after a hard-fought match against their opponents from the host nation, Bhutan.

However, Supong Longchar’s journey ended in the quarterfinals after conceding a defeat to his opponent from West Bengal in a fiercely contested match.

Speaking to Eastern Mirror, Zhakuo Seyie, who along with other players are on their way back to the state by train, said that he was eager to participate in the Bhutan Open upon hearing about the championship. He added he was interested in visiting the “serene country, known for its rich cultural identity, warm hospitality, unique attire, language, customs, and above all, its spiritual emphasis”.

“I dedicated significant time to mentally preparing myself for the tournament, drawing upon the valuable experience I have gained from competing in numerous national and international tournaments,” Seyie said, adding: “This experience has enhanced my ability to execute my game effectively and confidently.”

Much of the gameplay occurs subconsciously, given the pace of badminton game, he said, while adding that he was focused on developing situational strokes over the years.
