KOHIMA — The Kohima Bench of Gauhati High Court has disposed of a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking the establishment of a permanent All India Bar Examination (AIBE) centre in Nagaland after the Bar Council of India (BCI) informed the court that such a centre would be set up in the state from the next AIBE onwards.
The PIL was filed by practising advocates seeking directions to the BCI to establish an examination centre in Nagaland, enabling law students and graduates in the state to appear for the AIBE without having to travel outside the state.
The petition also sought the establishment of an examination centre, preferably in Kohima or Dimapur, before the AIBE 2026 examination scheduled for June 7. The court had issued notices to the respondents on April 22.

In its order dated June 10, 2026, the court noted that counsel for the parties submitted that an examination centre had been made available at Genesis School, Ward No. 12, Chandmari Upper Ward, Kohima Urban, for the AIBE 2026 held on June 7. A total of 56 candidates appeared for the examination.
The BCI also informed the court that a permanent AIBE centre would be made available for candidates in Nagaland from the next AIBE onwards.
"In view of the above facts and circumstances, it is noticed that the immediate relief sought by the PIL petitioners regarding an examination centre in the State of Nagaland for the AIBE-2026 has already been redressed," the court observed.
Accordingly, the court disposed of the petition.
