Nagaland ranked lowest of tourists’ visit among NE states

Dimapur, June 12 (EMN): Based on cumulative reports of the tourism sector of the country, Nagaland ranked lowest among the Northeastern states with 10979 domestic tourist visitors (DTV) and 518 foreign tourist visitors (FTV) during 2020.

According to data provided by the Tourism ministry, Assam topped among the NE states followed by Sikkim with 316408 DTV and 19935 FTV. It was followed by Tripura with 127815 DTV and Manipur with 49669 DTV. Arunachal Pradesh recorded 42871 DTV and 961 FTV, while Meghalaya recorded 24734 DTV and 2311 FTV. Mizoram recorded 30890 DTV and 265 FTV.

The ministry stated that there has been a continuous increase in domestic tourist visits with the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of domestic tourist visits to all states and union territories (UT) from 1991 to 2020, which recorded at 7.4%. It added that foreign tourist visits too have been increasing over the years, though there was a decline in the years 1992, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2009, 2012 and 2020. The foreign tourist visits to all states and UT during 1991 to 2020 witnessed a CAGR of 2.69%.

The year 2020 witnessed a growth of -73.7% in domestic tourist visits over the year 2019 whereas the visits by foreign tourists registered a growth of -77.2% over 2019. The decline in 2020 was due to Covid-19 pandemic. This was revealed by the Ministry of Tourism in its “India Tourism Statistics 2021”.

The number of domestic tourist visits (DTV) to the states and UT was 67,76,32,981 as compared to 61,02,16,157 in 2020 registering a growth of 11.05%.  But this was mainly due to the pandemic in 2020.

The top ten states and UT in terms of number of domestic tourist visits during 2021 included Tamil Nadu with 11,53,36,719, Uttar Pradesh with 10,97,08,435, Andhra Pradesh with 9,32,77,569, Karnataka with 8,13,33,659, Maharashtra with 4,35,69,238, Telangana with 3,20,00,620, Punjab with 2,66,40,429, Madhya Pradesh with 2,55,54,067, Gujarat with 2,45,25,210 and West Bengal with 2,43,25,984.

It may be mentioned that the Ministry of Tourism has compiled data of domestic tourist visits and foreign tourist visits to different states and UT basing upon the data supplied by the state government and UT administration.

As per the data provided by the Ministry, among the Northeast states, Assam has the highest domestic tourists’ visits with 1266898, while the highest foreign tourist’s visits was in Tripura with 31877. Assam’s foreign tourists visit was 7285.

The state with the least number of DTV was Lakshadweep with 3462 and 413 FTV and Ladakh 6743 DTV with 1126 FTV.
