Dimapur, June 11 (EMN):
As many as 24 complaint calls have made to Nagaland police since the intra-state check gates were removed in an attempt to curb illegal taxation and action taken on all the calls, said Director General of Police (DGP), T John Longkumer, at a press conference on Saturday held at Rhododendron Hall, Police Complex in Chumoukedima.

The DGP said that some calls were related to incidents in Larorijan, so they had registered a case and handed it over to the Assam police for necessary action.

He also updated that they recently had a meeting with the chief secretary of Nagaland in regards to application by departments that wish to re-open the check gates, and decision is still awaited.

When asked about if the closure of the check gates had any effect on law and order enforcement, Additional Director General of Police, Sandeep M Tamgadge replied that various state police agencies are co-ordinating to check illegal activities.

“After the order, under the direction of DGP, the entire Narcotic branch of Nagaland police has been restructured and reconstituted and we have now decided that smaller team will be acting not only in Kohima and Dimapur but all over the state, and we will be identifying and closing all the alternative routes which are suspect routes,” he stated.

He said that they have changed their strategy of not depending on the check gates for intercepting the suspected vehicles but now “we will go and start targeting the other suspected routes as well”.

Meanwhile, the DGP has requested other government departments not to use uniform similar to that of the police unless approved by the government.

After AFSPA removal

In regard to the lifting of AFSPA from 15 police stations in the state, the DGP shared that the police immediately formed a special operation group, set up a security grid and took over the security from the Assam Rifles.

He updated that so far, the reports from those areas are normal. ‘We have also reached out to various NGOs and tribal Hohos in this regard under the approval of the government of Nagaland, that peace, tranquillity and harmony should remain in this area,’ he added.

Longkumer updated that they have started providing security to infrastructure companies especially the road maintenance companies that are all over the state. Recently, one new company reported about facing some issues and five complains were received.

“We have registered five cases in this regard and the investigation is going on,” he said.
