Nagaland police aspires to have a ‘sports company’

The Nagaland police wants a ‘sports company,’ even as the department has also drafted a sports policy, says the state’s chief of police.

The District Executive Force (DEF) of Mokokchung celebrated its Raising Day with Nagaland director general of police (DGP) T John Longkumer as the chief guest of the event on Tuesday at the New Reserve Mokokchung.

The DGP informed that the current 80-men sports company will be increased to 150 and pursue the department’s dream of raising a ‘sports battalion’ in the days to come.

Longkumer informed that the department has drafted a new games and sports policy which has been approved by him. Besides, the ‘DGP football team’ will be ‘revamped,’ the gathering was told.

He said 250 motorcycles have been ‘rolled out for patrolling purposes’ besides instating the facility of GPS location trackers. Longkumer mentioned that the “Elite Force” called the Special Task Force (STF) has been raised too with the concept of urban warfare to conduct anti-terror operations.

The police official said that the launch of the Tourist Police in 2018 resulted in an incident-free Hornbill festival with ‘zero FIR complains.’ Another development, he added, is that Nagaland is the second state in the country to launch the emergency response system in India.

In other matters, Longkumer informed that a cooperative credit society will be set up at the end of the year to offier financial credit assistance to police
personnel.

Earlier in the event, the Guard of Honour and a wreath ceremony was held at the quarter guard. A volleyball exhibition match was played between teams representing the Armed Branch and the Unarmed Branch. The Armed Branch emerged the victor.

In commemoration of Raising Day, the DEF of Mokokchung also conducted other activities. A mini-marathon race was also held on February 24 from Imkongmeren Sports Complex to New Reserve. A total of 171 persons participated, out of which 22 were females. The youngest runner was 12 years old and the oldest was a 55-year-old.

The DEF also visited the Care and Support Society Children Home and distributed school bags, umbrellas and geometry boxes to the children. A workshop about traffic besides and a cyber crime awareness programme also were conducted at various schools.
