DIMAPUR — Zunheboto district emerged as the overall champions in 2-day wushu competition held in the ongoing Nagaland Olympic and Paralympic Games (NOPG) 2024 at Arena E in Chümoukedima on Friday.

Zunheboto won 9 medals including 3 gold, 4 silver and two bronze in wushu events, followed by Dimapur with six medals — 3 gold, one silver and two bronze, informed an update from Nagaland Wushu Association (NWA).

Mankho T. Konyak of Mon district bagged the best fighter award, while Peren district was named the best disciplined team.

A total of 52 participants, including seven women from Dimapur, Peren, Phek, Mon, Shamator, Mokokchung, and Zunheboto districts, took part in the championship organised by the NWA.

Advisor of Civil Administrative Works Department (CAWD), Kudecho Khamo, who is also the president of the NWA, said during the valedictory function that one could become an ambassador for the state to the rest of the world through sports and encouraged the youth to pursue it as a profession.

Lauding the participants for making the event a success, he said that under the leadership of Chief Minister and Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA) President Niephiu Rio, sports facilities in the state have improved over the years.

He added that the NWA is committed to nurturing wushu players in the state despite lack of facilities and financial constraints.

Advisor to the chief minister and Chairman of IDAN, Abu Metha, who is also the secretary general of NOA, said that wushu is a strong pillar for the NOA, describing it as one of the most entertaining events at the NOPG.

He also announced that the best players at the event would be representing the state in the upcoming Northeast Olympic Games, which will be held in one month’s time.
