Kohima, April 14 (EMN):
Principal Director of School Education, Shanavas C on Wednesday lamented students’ poor performance in Mathematics and Science and appealed to the teachers of the state to deal with these subjects ‘very delicately’ and apply innovative methods to instil interest in students.

Shanavas was speaking at the state-level student virtual Science seminar and exhibition which was participated by schools from all districts. The event was organised by the Directorate of School Education (DSE).

He told the gathering that such exercises (events) should not be a one-time programme but should be held throughout the year.

Underscoring the importance of Science and Mathematics subjects, he said they are more significant that many would think and expressed hope that the programme would help students develop interest in the subjects and the state would eventually produce more engineers and doctors in future.

The officer further appealed the department of Higher Education to give importance to courses related to medicine and engineering.

In Science seminar, 11 schools competed on the theme ‘Novel Covid-19 threat in future: Prospect and Challenges’. The first prize went to Lomunu Kweho from Mezhur Higher Secondary School, Kohima, while the second place was shared by two students — Herola A Sangtam of Saramati View Modern High School, Kiphire, and Mangshizenla of Town Higher Secondary School, Mokokchung.

Meanwhile, 11 schools from 11 districts participated in the exhibition on the theme ‘scientific solution for challenges in life’. Thsipongla and Kholi Sangtam of Saramati View Modern High School, Kiphire were declared winners of the competition, while Amon Dey of Model School, Mon and Edirenla of Fernwood School, Kohima stood in the second and third positions respectively.

Judges for the event were Vilakhole Naki, Research Associate, SCERT; Dr. Limatemjen, Asst. Prof., and Keneizoulhou Kesiezie of Kohima Science College, Jotsoma.
