Nagaland observes World Food Day with a call to address hunger

Dimapur, Oct. 16 (EMN): Nagaland observed the World Food Day on October 16 with a clarion called to all stakeholders to grow varieties of food crops in addressing the problem of poverty and hunger as well as nourish the growing population and to sustain the planet.

To mark the occasion, department of Agriculture organised a programme in its directorate on the theme ‘Smart solution for healthy diets’.

Speaking on the theme, the joint director of Agriculture, Dr. I Amenla, stated that countries across the world celebrate World Food Day to create awareness and address poverty and hunger. She also encouraged all the stakeholders to grow all kinds of food items and sustain the planet earth together by choosing healthy and nutritious food.

She urged the people to recognise, respect and support the farmers — food heroes, who make every effort to ensure the food security for all. Stating that farmers have not failed to produce food, she requested the department officials to reach out to them in building the chain link to promote healthy and nourished livelihood.

She further urged the officials to put in more efforts for the uplift of small and marginal farmers.

During the programme, director of Agriculture M Ben Yanthan briefed the background and significance of World Food Day, while the joint director Hewoto Sumi made a power point presentation on ‘hunger’.

To commemorate the occasion, the department officials visited the Good Samaritan Senior Citizen’s Home at Meriema, Kohima.
