Dimapur/Kohima, June 6 (EMN):  Various institutions and organisations held programmes marking World Environment Day (WED), which was celebrated on June 5 on the theme ‘Only one Earth’, across the state.

LFHSS: Little flower Higher Secondary School (LFHSS), National Service Scheme (NSS) Club, Kohima organised a plantation drive around the school campus on account of WED on Monday. It was informed that about 120 saplings were planted around the school campus.

The club encouraged the students and staff for a collective environmental action and advocated for transformative environmental change on a global scale and further encouraged to live sustainably. The volunteers along with the teachers further distributed eco-friendly reusable cotton bags to the traffic personnel in and around Kohima town.

The benefits of using reusable bag were shared by the NSS volunteers to those manning the road. Meanwhile, the Program Officer (NSS), Naro Imchen expressed gratitude to the police for permitting the students to interact with the traffic personnel and making the drive successful while acknowledging Kohima Forest Division for donating the saplings to the volunteers.

Azedon School: Azedon School, Kohima marked the day with a painting competition for class 8, 9 and 10 with a focus on “Living sustainably in harmony with nature” on Monday.

Vivosenu of class 8, Yichunthung of class 10 and Ester of class 9 secured the first, second and third respectively in the painting competition. The students and teachers also took part in various activities such as plantation drives and making paper bags from old newspapers.

A short programme was organised in the school after the plantation drive was conducted. L Sentinaro Jamir, Headmistress of the school spoke on the importance of nature conservation and encouraged the teachers and students to work together as one in protecting the environment.

SCC: In commemoration of WED, the community service committee of Salt Christian College, Dimapur organised a cleanliness and plantation drive in East Police colony, Dimapur on June 4. Students and teachers of the college along with the residents of the colony took active part in the activity. Twelve tree saplings and shrubs were planted to beautify the colony.

Nagaland House, New Delhi: The staff of Nagaland House, New Delhi observed the day by planting fruit trees around the premises on June 5. Additional Chief Secretary and Chief Resident Commissioner, Jyoti Kalash highlighted the importance of WED, global warming, and protection of nature.

SSUD: Sangtam Student’s Union Dimapur (SSUD) donated plants to Sangtam Baptist Lithro Dimapur (SBLD), Sangtam Baptist Lithro Purana Bazaar and Sangtam Baptist Fellowship, Eralibill Dimapur on the occasion of WED.

Tuli: A programme was also organised by Nagaland Ecological and Sanitation Management Society (NESMS) in collaboration with Community Health Centre (CHC), Tuli on June 6. The programme was attended by Dr. Narola SMO, Tuli, staff of CHC, Moatsungba, Supervisor of NESMS and its volunteers.

AR: As part of the concerted efforts of the Assam Rifles (AR) to  promote  initiatives towards raising awareness and actions to preserve nature for a better tomorrow, Ghaspani (7 AR) under HQ IGAR (North) undertook a tree plantation drive and observed WED in Medziphema.

The drive was organised in collaboration with civil administration, Forest and Police officials, SASRD Medziphema and local volunteers from Medziphema. Over 1000 tree saplings were planted.

Meanwhile, in the run up to WED, a series of events was also organised by the kids of Assam Rifles Public School, Medziphema which included one-week summer camp, an outdoor activity for the kids to connect with Mother Nature, poster making, painting etc.
