Nagaland observes World Diabetes Day

DIMAPUR — Several districts across Nagaland observed World Diabetes Day on Thursday on the theme “Breaking barriers, bridging gaps.”

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which the body fails to process and utilise the glucose which is produced from the food we consume. There are mainly three types of diabetes namely type-1 diabetes, type-2 diabetes and gestational diabetes.

Type-2 diabetes is the common type of diabetes affecting more than 90% of people with diabetes. Symptoms of diabetes mellitus are excessive thirst, frequent hunger, urinating large amount, weight loss, feeling tired etc.

Complications of diabetes are heart disease, retinopathy, stroke, diabetic nephropathy, diabetic neuropathy and diabetes foot problem etc.

Mon: District Health Society (DHS), Mon, observed World Diabetes Day on Thursday at District Hospital, Mon, on the theme “Diabetes and well being.”

During a brief gathering, Dr. Supongmenla Walling, chief medical officer (CMO), Mon, stated that the day was observed to raise awareness about the disease’s increasing prevalence, complications and treatment options. She stated that the repercussions could be prevented or postponed with medicine and added that regular screening and treatment for complications is essential, stated an update from the office of CMO, Mon.

Dr. Walling also explained on type 1 and type 2 diabetes stating that the disease is a leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, stroke and lower limb amputation. She added that a healthy diet, regular physical activity and limiting tobacco use could help prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.

She concluded by stating that with adequate access to diabetic care and support, everyone could overcome the disease.

Imtirenla Longkumer, NCD counselor at DH, Mon, stated that the number of high blood pressure and diabetic patients in the OPD is consistently high. She also claimed that 23 persons were screened, five of whom were diagnosed with diabetes on Thursday at the District Hospital, Mon.

The report stated that all the blocks in the district marked the day with great enthusiasm.

Mokokchung: Mokokchung district also observed World Diabetes Day at the conference hall of the chief medical officers (CMO), wherein a brief note on diabetes was delivered by Dr. Kibangkumba, CMO of Mokokchung. He also highlighted about the signs and symptoms of diabetics and the importance of early detection treatment.

Dr. Limanaro, DPO (UIP&RCH), urged the participants and ASHAs to spread awareness on diabetes to the community and advised to go for screening. She spoke about the diabetes type 1 and 2, symptoms and treatment and the importance of exercise and lifestyle modification for control of diabetes.

Wokha: World Diabetes Day in Wokha was observed at United Baptist Church, Doyang, while screening of diabetes mellitus and hypertension was held at IP Hall of NEEPCO, Doyang.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. N Mhonchan Kithan, medical superintendent at Dr. Motsuo Memorial District Hospital, Wokha, advised regular check up investigation every three month and get treatment with anti-diabetic medicine and insulin depending on the severity of the disease.

Jessica Ezung, NCD counselor at DMMDH, Wokha, shared that out of 10 persons, 1 person is affected with Diabetes. She advised to promote physical activity, exercise, improve lifestyle, maintain ideal body weight, healthy balance diet, avoid alcohol and tobacco which are harmful to health.

A total 55 persons were screened for diabetes and hypertension and treated by NCD staff of DMMDH and NP-NCD, Wokha.
